V22 Young London saw John design/make 5 trophies and a court to play 5 childhood games in an ‘Endz-Olympics’. The exhibition featured several events where participants would compete in 5 games; ‘Nutmeg Rush’, ‘Money Up’, ‘Kerbsy’, ‘Patball’ and ‘The Magic Ring’. To sign up competitors would sign indemnity agreements for the chance to win original trophy works.
The games, played on estates and playgrounds in london and further afield, reference street life and working class attributes in a positive and fun sense, all the while undertones of social inequality permeate from the work. A tennis ball shakes the trophy cabinet from behind, a reminder that its not always possible to keep your eyes on the prize.
