J Hammond Project Spaces, London

Poetic and personal, the work reflects on John’s upbringing and past experiences. Synthetic grass is a strong motif within the artists work, his father was a green grocer and John spent much time in the shop growing up ‘under the counter’ as he puts it.

The shape of the grass is a silhouette from a photo taken in Suffolk during John’s time in prison. The tree guard and roto-spike are also symbolic of this time expressing the growth he experienced via the restriction he lived. The trainers are also from this part of the artist's life, visual wordplay is a tool that Costi utilizes often.
